Oneiroi

Oneiroi turns your dreams into an interactive experience, bringing them to life. Oneiroi can create photorealistic illustrations and storybook-quality art using emotional activity during the dream leveraging movements, words, lines of text, and tags.

Samsung Research Think Tank team asked me to work on a project for one of their design challenges.

Challenge: Samsung has invented a new sensor that lets users record and track their dreams. Create a new product idea and define the key UX features that can improve billions of people’s lives.

Solution: A sensor built into a silicon forehead patch is applied to the forehead to record the most vivid dreams on a mobile application 'Oneroi' to help users explore and augment the creative potential of their minds.

Timeline:

1 week

Software:

Figma

Adobe Illustrator

Research:

Are there any potential users out there?

I reached out to my network to see the value proposition of tracking and recording dreams.

"Given the chance to track and record your dreams, would you ever do so?"

“Absolutely! Dreams are full of amazing stories and also digging deeper into the human subconscious. Thus, it would be perfect for researching into one's mind.”
|German Shein

“They can be a portal to a new side of your brain and I feel like I don't have access because I can't remember.”
|Brian

“ I would like to track my dreams for reference because I believe in them lies gems that I need to explore.”
|Scott

“Yes, I would for sure record my dreams if I could--I find dreaming to be fascinating, and enjoy trying to understand if there's any subliminal/subconscious meaning behind my dreams... so being able to review the recorded dreams would help me remember them, and dissect them much easier”
|Sandra

Secondary research

I conducted a secondary research and read through papers and articles to understand what events occur during dreaming that could be potentially tracked by a sensor built-in forehead patch.

MOVEMENT

Subconcious mind has connection with muscles. Even with eyes closed the mind is triggering muscles to move which can be measured.

HEART RATE

Heart rate can vary quite a bit during REM sleep because it reflects the activity level occurring in the dream.

Neuroactivity

Four main clusters of brain increases in activity that;

  1. instigates movement

  2. Engages autobiographical memory

  3. Enables complex visual perception

  4. Amygdala generates and process emotions

Eyelid motion

An increase in eye movement frequency when people hit the REM sleep stage

What is the need?

With all the research I conducted, I figured out the basic need for the product and why anyone would need to invest in it.

To work through unprocessed issues

Problem solving

Enhance more creativity

Design exploration

To explore a product with a sensor built into it, I tried to sketch out multiple options that could measure the multiple neurological and cognitive activities happening during the dream.

With product exploration, I decided to hone in on tracking the neurological activity of a dreamer as the brain becomes more active during REM sleep, with increased training in the regions responsible for processing emotions, memories, and sensory information. This increased activity may contribute to dreams' vivid and sometimes strange content.

Final product form:

But how will these dreams be translated into understanding...

To help facilitate users' understanding and tracking of their dreams, I started working on the Oneiroi app, which gets connected to the forehead patch.

Design goals:

- Facilitate users in understanding their dreams in uncomplicated and straightforward language.

- Allow users to remember their dreams more vividly and retain more details about them to be used in real life.

- Provide opportunities for users to navigate and control their dreams.

Oneiroi tracks neuro activity triggered by emotions during different cycles of users' dream

User gets to preset the emotions with colors to help create their dream activity chart.

User can set their notifications to allow app to wake them to record their dreams.

Oneiroi translates the emotional neuro activity into a personalized graph to describe the events.

During REM sleep, there is movement in multiple muscles which can be tracked and presented to the user.

During REM sleep, once the app detects that the user has been dreaming, Oneroi can slowly wake them up to record their dream.

Oneirio can turn a dream, leveraging text, audio, tags, emotions, and movements, into an impactful storyboard for the otherwise blurry dream.

Oneiroi can convert storyboard into short videos for easy visualization or storyboard could be used to create panaromic canvas for interaction in Virtual reality.

Who are the users of Oneiroi?

Millennials

Individuals born between 1980-2000, striving in the competitive corporate world of innovation and challenge, can problem-solve in reality by referencing dreams.

Content creators

Individuals who aim to create creative content can share their artistic or creative dreams to interact with their sizeable followers.

Therapist

Medical professionals who would like to learn about their patients feelings, thoughts, choices, and actions and provide guidance based on that.
